Muriel Matters
Muriel Matters is a documentary musical in development that delves into the extraordinary life of Muriel Matters, a true trailblazer suffragist. The musical takes us through her journey from a celebrated elocutionist and actress—performing at prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall in London—to a fearless activist in the British suffrage movement.
Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Britain, Muriel Matters traces her transformation as she confronts the harsh realities facing women. After joining the Women’s Freedom League, Muriel embarks on a bold activist path, travelling across southeast England aboard the League’s caravan to campaign for women’s rights.
The musical highlights pivotal moments in Muriel’s life, including her daring protest on October 28, 1908, when she chained herself to the oppressive grille in the House of Commons, becoming the first woman to speak within its walls. Through documentary material, historical record, and theatrical storytelling, Muriel Matters stages the resistance she faced—from anti-suffragists like Lady Jersey and Prime Minister Herbert Asquith—and the powerful responses she led, including a major funeral march and a fierce political debate.
Her activism reached the skies as she led the world’s first aerial protest, scattering suffrage pamphlets across London—making global headlines. The musical honours her enduring legacy as a champion of women’s rights, children’s welfare, and social justice.
Muriel's words ring out as a reminder that everything we do—great or small—matters. It matters.
